New Year's Day

Saw amazing fireworks in Dubai on tv so watched more on YouTube http://youtu.be/C9kRCUny7RU. Had leisurely start - mike had a shower. Went to den ham at 10.30 and met Maryanne for walk. Supposed to be with Steve Mary Jim and viv but they had bottled out because of bad weather forecast. Mike dropped me and suki off and went to harefield and sat in car reading. It was a wet and muddy walk along the grand union canal towpath but wind was behind us and not too bad. Got to pub at 12.20 just as mike was getting out of car. The others arrived about 1. Had lovely lunch of smoked haddock and salmon fish cakes. Had waffle with cherries for pudding - although diet officially started again today. Now competing with gill how on app to each ten stone. Weather deteriorated through lunch and was appalling when we left so very glad we didn't have to walk back. Dropped Maryanne off at her car and got home about 3.45. Had shower and loaded office from jack's disc on to new computer - worked fine. Did some washing and watched programme on ballooning over Everest. Watched last of the Harry potter films in the evening and tried out the 3 bottles of Christmas beer Carolyn gave mike for Christmas. Bed at 10.30.

(click here for short, 2-page version pdf!) Doesn’t time fly! It seems no time at all since I was composing last year’s letter. What a gorgeous summer we had - the heatwave seemed to go on for ever and I spent many a happy hour sitting in the garden - as did Suki! As expected, Mary (Mike’s mum) passed away on 13th December last year - nearly 5 weeks after she first took to her bed and stopped eating.  Everyone at Tracey House was so good with her, caring for her and keeping her comfortable. They also took care of everything at the end which was very helpful. We were fortunate to be able to have the funeral before Christmas so it wasn’t hanging over until the new year. Mary had written down her wishes for hymns and readings and even a potted history for the eulogy! It was very easy to organise, even from a distance. Saturday 1 February

Mike went off ringing QPs and I went to Denham to do 7-mile Colne Valley circular walk I had stumbled across when researching New Year's Day canal walk.  Walking by 9.10.  Took me four and a half hours because went slightly wrong in the woods and then decided to research possible short cut for future, and also because unable to get under railway bridge at Ickenham due to floods so had to do long detour.  Lovely morning - clear and sunny and not too cold although the wind was somewhat chill.  Underfoot was extremely muddy and often deep in water - luckily boots were up to it.  Had blisters under both feet by the end.  Also found I had burrs sticking to my ear muffs - but only after I had been talking to people whilst completely unaware of this. Got home and changed bedding and did washing.  Then had lovely hot shower and got into comfies for the evening.  Did cross stitch and watched England being beaten by France at Rugby in the last few minutes.  Had pate from Son Ferrer market fo

Roving Ringers Reunion Weekend 21-22 Feb

Lee and Emma picked up Suki on Friday afternoon - which left us clear on Saturday to just get up and go.  We were going to listen to the Everest book on the way up to Huntingdon - but we couldn't get the phone audio to work through the bluetooth on the car, even though the phone was shown as paired.  So we listened to an interesting programme on the Bach Magnificat instead.  We set off a bit late but got to the first tower at Godmanchester about 10.20 am and Hal immediately came down and carried Mike up.  I tried to ring there but they were too heavy for me and the ropes were new and springy so I didn't carry on.  The next tower was St Ives - which was a ground floor ring with an awful lot of rope, so I didn't ring there but stayed around in the body of the church chatting.  I walked back to the town before the session finished and had a happy time browsing round the shops and farmers marker.  I got myself some nail varnish - another first shock horror!!  At the market I bo
