Sunday 12 January

Had slightly disturbed night but kept going quickly back to sleep again. Got up just after 6.30. Timer set for heater didn't work but the one for the heater in the bathroom did which was nice. Took suki to Parke for an hour at 7.30. Still dark but quickly got light. Then went ringing and to church. Helped Jean to communion rail! Traidcraft stall afterwards so stayed for coffee and spent a happy £20 on the stall. Then went home via Tesco to pick up more washing liquid in anticipation of finally being able to do some tomorrow when new boiler in. Had porridge for lunch having only had a banana for breakfast so good on calories. Wrote an email to mike and then did sewing - stitched the fleece to the back of the cot blanket and did the fraying to finish it at last.   About 4 by the time I got out with suki and absolutely lashing down with rain. Went to Parke and did short woodland circuit and back through the fields. Had intended to go to see Mary but we were both absolutely dripping wet and decided to go back instead. Did ironing and turned up the grey trousers I got in the Kathmandu closing down sale. Hoovered up the mess - again very satisfying. Practised some Yorkshire then watched tv with jacket potato and finished off red wine. Had early night.

(click here for short, 2-page version pdf!) Doesn’t time fly! It seems no time at all since I was composing last year’s letter. What a gorgeous summer we had - the heatwave seemed to go on for ever and I spent many a happy hour sitting in the garden - as did Suki! As expected, Mary (Mike’s mum) passed away on 13th December last year - nearly 5 weeks after she first took to her bed and stopped eating.  Everyone at Tracey House was so good with her, caring for her and keeping her comfortable. They also took care of everything at the end which was very helpful. We were fortunate to be able to have the funeral before Christmas so it wasn’t hanging over until the new year. Mary had written down her wishes for hymns and readings and even a potted history for the eulogy! It was very easy to organise, even from a distance. Saturday 1 February

Mike went off ringing QPs and I went to Denham to do 7-mile Colne Valley circular walk I had stumbled across when researching New Year's Day canal walk.  Walking by 9.10.  Took me four and a half hours because went slightly wrong in the woods and then decided to research possible short cut for future, and also because unable to get under railway bridge at Ickenham due to floods so had to do long detour.  Lovely morning - clear and sunny and not too cold although the wind was somewhat chill.  Underfoot was extremely muddy and often deep in water - luckily boots were up to it.  Had blisters under both feet by the end.  Also found I had burrs sticking to my ear muffs - but only after I had been talking to people whilst completely unaware of this. Got home and changed bedding and did washing.  Then had lovely hot shower and got into comfies for the evening.  Did cross stitch and watched England being beaten by France at Rugby in the last few minutes.  Had pate from Son Ferrer market fo

The last three weeks of "old normal" Life

Although we didn't know it at the time, we were heading for the great Coronavirus pandemic when life changed for everyone across the globe.  At the time of writing this blog we are still in it, and we do not know what the "new normal" life will be like.  I have decided to do a separate blog for this strange time as it was so different from "Life".  Whether I shall return to "Life" or start another new chapter after it is all over, I do not know yet. I was back in London for about 3 weeks before my next Devon visit.  I went to the Dentist to get my broken tooth fixed.  They suggested a temporary fix and a consultation with their root canal specialist with a view to clearing out the low level infection that had been present for many years under the tooth and then have a crown.  I had the fix first - £350.  I was very pleased with it.  It turned out that it was just the cosmetic bit of the filling that had broken off, and the filling itself was intact, so
